Camping on Eight Mile Road at Lake Meade

If you're looking for a spot on Lake Meade to camp for free take a look at Eight Mile Road on the Nevada side of Lake Meade. It does cost to enter the Lake Meade National Recreation Area but no fee to camp. This is a very dry barren area except for the bottom near the lake which you will see in the pictures below. There is no water other than the lake and no toilets. The only garbage service is the dumpsters by the highway.

I don't know if these dumpsters are always here but it would seem likely.

I personally liked the site with the trailer best.

Across the draw you can see the Government Wash area.

Down toward the lake there is a lot of brush some of which is over ten feet tall.

This spot was pretty muddy but there are many dry banks if you want to fish or wade.
Eight Mile Road offers 7 day camping but just across the a draw is Goverment Wash and you may stay there for 14 days. I suppose one could bounce back and forth. Although I am not sure anybody would notice how long a person stayed at either site. If you are looking for a place to spend part of your winter you could certainly hangout here however I see two drawbacks. First it is a long trip for supplies and second if you drive around you are required to buy a 7 day vehicle permit costing $10. I guess that's pretty cheap for 7 days of free camping.
