Bruneau Dunes State Park

Bruneau Dunes State Park has North America's tallest single-structured sand dune rising approximately 470 feet high. This site was chosen to house Idaho's largest public observatory primarily due to its very dark skies. The observatory is free, first come first serve as long as you have purchased your day use fee ($5) which can be purchased at the Big Dunes picnic area. This area is popular for bird watching. No vehicles are allowed on the Dunes but climbers are welcome. There is a visitor center at the park. There are two separate campgrounds at the state park, Broken Wheel Campground and Eagle Cove Campground.

Campsites

Between the two campgrounds, there are approximately 82 sites with water and electricity and 16 standard sites. Some sites have 50 amp service. Some sites have 30 amp service and are reserveable. Some sites have no hook-ups. Broken Wheel is a developed campground with mature trees. Some of the campsites have shelters over the picnic tables. Eagle Cove Campground is newer and has little to no cover. Maximum 65' space for RV's.

There are flushing toilets in the campground and we found them to be clean and well-maintained.

Pets are welcome on a leash.

There is a central shower and restroom facilities in each campground.

There is cell phone reception in this campground, but limited. There is a pay phone at the visitor center.

There are small lakes at the foot of the dunes that are great for bass and bluegill.

Getting There

Bruneau Dunes State Park is located 18 miles south of Mountain Home. From I-84 take exit 95 at Mountain Home. Travel south on Hwy 51 for about 17 miles to intersection with Hwy 78, left on Hwy 78 about 1.7 miles. The park is on the right, watch for the sign.
